| Other Info | Once upon a time, there was a youg man named Matt Sever. He lived in Austin, TX, and he worked as a journeyman electrician. Every morning, when it was still dark outside, he would go to work, and wire houses all day long in the blistering Texas heat. When he would come home, again, it was dark outside. And then, sometimes, with no time to shower or change his clothes, he would go straight to the bars and nightclubs of Austin to play his songs for whomever would listen. And he would apologize for his appearance, and explain to the audience that he was an electrician, and he found a certain nobility in this, even if no one wanted to sit too close to the stage. So they called him Matt The Electrician, and he did not mind this, for he was proud of himself, for there is no shame in a hard days work. But eventually, he quit his job as an electrician, to spend more time writing and playing songs, and the name stuck with him, because everyone needs an electrician sometimes. And there are some who say, that when the moon is full, and Jupiter is aligned with Mars, you can often hear Matt The Electrician in the distance, wiring a house, and whistling softly to himself. http://www.matttheelectrician.com/ |
Ooh La La Lollapalooza 2011
This year I made my second trip to Lollapalooza and per usual it failed to disappoint. Thinking back to 2 years ago at Lolla I remember one band that stood out to me as the best of the day. It was raining all day and everyone was muddy, disgusted from all day porta potty use - but very happy because all of us music lovers were together listening to beautiful sounds. With the rain we all sang along to the tunes of Bon Iver. You’ve heard this before so I won’t go into too much detail except to say that I had another magical moment this year. It’s that moment that you hear a song for the first time and you immediately know it, like know it. That probably doesn’t make sense but I think the best songs are ones that you hear for the first time and immediately respond to. You have no doubt when you buy their cd that it is going to be amazing and that’s what happened with Young the Giant. I could hear their music from far away and walking up towards their stage I just had this surge of happiness inside. They are EVERY bit as good live as their cd which really is saying something – It’s not just their production company that makes them good -they really are that good. Their music is fun, definitely west coast, and may I say that Sameer is ridiculously cute? Two more things for brownie points: 1) They are touring right now with Incubus 2) In March they headlined the Billboard Showcase at South by Southwest. Just another reason to go to Austin this year!

Other AMAZING Lolla bands:
Grace Potter and the Nocturnals – I talked mostly about Young the Giant but they were my second favorite of the day
Wye Oak - WO had some electrical problems her first time at Lolla but man was she cute. Like her a lot.

2011 Grammy’s were Redonkulous
Perhaps it was just me, but the Grammy’s were pretty darn awesome this year. Besides Taylor Swift not being there of course. Arcade Fire won album of the year?? Their performance was both weird and awesome at the same time. Best new artist was not Bieber, but Esperanza Spalding?? Where did this awesome gal even come from? These Grammy organizers really know what’s up. But BY FAR the best performance of the night was from Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers. I felt like I was seeing them at a local bar. Loved the stage set up. If you missed it, check it out…

| Other Info | THE WEEPIES Be My Thrill (Nettwerk 2010) Since they met in a Cambridge folk club 9 years ago, The Weepies have progressed from an indie duo playing house concerts, to ranks on the Billboard Charts. Though they now have sales in the hundreds of thousands, the Weepies have kept a surprisingly low profile; they haven’t toured at all since 2006. “Our son was born right as we finished HIDEAWAY,” (Nettwerk, 2008) says Steve Tannen. “Touring was out. It was a huge change from the 180 shows of the SAY I AM YOU release (Nettwerk, 2006).” The band was kept in the spotlight by dozens of uses in TV shows and films, including a prominent campaign ad for Barack Obama. “It was pretty surreal to stay at home while the music went out into the world,” adds Deb Talan. “But staying at home got us back into writing that much more quickly.” Crystallizing their organic acoustic sound and pop harmonies, the California duo has come up with their deepest, most accessible record yet. Third in a trilogy for Nettwerk Records, The Weepies once again worked with drummer Frank Lenz, guitarist Meg Toohey and string player Oliver Kraus, adding bass legends Tony Levin and Larry Klein to the mix. “This is the most fun we’ve had making a record,” says Deb. “We took as much time as we needed at every step, and taking that pressure off made the whole thing a little lighter.” “It took a year,” adds Steve. “We wrote something like 70 tunes, and were able to experiment quite a bit before these 14 songs emerged as the record.” That process has paid off artistically with this wonderful new collection. BE MY THRILL is a showcase for the duo’s powerhouse songwriting and unique harmonies, ranging from the Cole-Porter-Esque “They’re in Love” to the Dusty Springfield-like “When You Go Away.” The Weepies will be appearing on the 2010 Lilith Tour this summer. Be My Thrill will be released August 31, 2010. |

Jukebox the Ghost…Piano Rock!

JukeBox the Ghost
So a good friend of mine, Mr. Vince Eagan, sent me an email earlier this week to check out this band: Jukebox the Ghost. He’s got good taste in pretty much everything, so I clicked the link and listened away. Low and behold, good music! He had seen them on Letterman and thought they were good, bought their cd, and now we will be partaking in their delightful music tonight at Radio Radio. Fingers crossed he ever gets back to me so I have a date. Anyways, I just thought I would share with you the link so that you can do the same. Buy their cd and go out to Radio Radio tonight to see them. Ticket’s are only $8. Do it to it!

| Other Info | I have waited soooo long for these guys to come to Indy. Can't Wait! It should be a great show. Here's what Radio Radio has to say.... A darling of its local scene in Chapel Hill, N.C., Roman Candle evolved near the UNC campus in the late '90s. The band's tight, narrative lyrics, whole-hearted roots rock and invigorating dynamic turned many heads, including label heads that eventually shelved The Wee Hours Revue. That album wasn't picked up for another four years, but still lit the pages of critics' review. Roman Candle has now released its third studio LP, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear. It has touches of lyrical dreaminess, a bit of pop and some North Carolina back roads charm. |

Hardest. Thing. Ever. So I am recruiting help. Of course Edwin will be in there somewhere. I’m just trying to decide on the perfect song. And probably a Counting Crows song as well. Here is what I’ve definitely decided on so far….
